Drum Making

TamKira’s Shamanic Drum Making Workshop is a transformative experience that invites participants to craft their own sacred instrument while connecting with ancient traditions and personal spiritual practice.

Over the course of this immersive workshop, individuals learn the techniques of drum making, imbuing their drum with intention, energy, and personal significance.

Guided by traditional wisdom and spiritual teachings, participants are empowered to create a tool for healing, meditation, and ritual, making the drum a reflection of their unique journey.

  • In many Indigenous and shamanic traditions, drums hold profound spiritual meaning, acting as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. The heartbeat of the drum mirrors the heartbeat of the Earth, connecting the drummer with the energy of nature and the cosmos. The sound of the drum is used to induce states of meditation, trance, and connection with the spirit realm, making it a powerful tool for healing and transformation.

At TamKira, the workshop emphasizes the sacred nature of drum making. Participants are guided to approach the process with mindfulness, respect, and reverence for the materials and spiritual energies involved. The workshop encourages a deep connection with the drum, making the act of creation an intentional spiritual practice that honors both the individual and the natural world.

  • The drum making process is hands-on and deeply personal. Participants are introduced to traditional materials, which typically include a wooden frame and rawhide for the drumhead. The rawhide is often sourced from animals in a way that honors their life and spirit, reinforcing the sacred connection between the drum and the natural world. TamKira provides all materials, ensuring that participants have access to quality, ethically sourced components.

During the workshop, participants are taught the fundamental techniques of drum making, from preparing the drum frame to stretching and securing the drumhead. As participants work, they are encouraged to imbue their drum with their personal intentions, prayers, and energy. Each step in the process is taken with care and mindfulness, allowing the drum to become a spiritual extension of its maker.

In addition to the physical construction, participants learn about the symbolic meaning behind each part of the drum. The circle of the frame represents unity, wholeness, and the cycles of life, while the drumhead, once alive, carries the energy and spirit of the animal. This understanding deepens the spiritual connection to the drum, turning it into a vessel for personal healing and transformation.

  • Throughout the workshop, participants are encouraged to reflect on the purpose of their drum and the intentions they wish to set for its use. Whether it will be used for personal meditation, healing work, ceremony, or community gatherings, the drum carries the energy of its creator and the intentions infused during its making.

The process of creating the drum is meditative and often emotional, as participants connect with their deeper selves, their ancestors, and the spirit of the drum. The workshop incorporates moments of reflection, meditation, and intention-setting, allowing participants to align with the spiritual purpose of their drum. Group discussions and storytelling also provide space for participants to share their experiences and connect with others in the circle.

  • The Shamanic Drum Making Workshop with TamKira fosters a strong sense of community. As participants work together to create their drums, they also share in the collective energy of the group, building bonds that enhance the spiritual experience. The act of creating in a communal space brings a powerful sense of connection and unity, as each participant’s journey is supported and honored by the group.

This final step is a celebration of the creative process and the spiritual journey each participant has undertaken. By the end of the workshop, individuals leave not only with a completed drum but also with a deeper connection to their spirit, the Earth, and the community around them.
